Italy is facing an abnormal desertification process, with 2022 as the driest year ever recorded. Among the main causes: water leakage and extremely high domestic consumption—6,300 liters per person per day.

To highlight this crisis, we created the Travel Guide to the Italian Deserts. We traveled across Italy with Nat Geo photographer Gabriele Galimberti collecting photos, stories, and our itineraries to create a guide to the iconic Italian landscapes that are changing fast.
